On a cold winter’s day, when its cloudy & / or rainy why not opt for a pick-me-up ‘soul food’ like ‘Rasam’ than a cold salad? Rasam is a delicious South Indian dish which is versatile – you can have it as a soup… or with rice/bread… or to end your meal.


Prep time: 15 mins

Cooking time: 20 mins


Toor Dal – 1 cup
Tomatoes – 2
Tamarind – as per taste
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Red chilies – 2
Asafetida / Hing – ¼ th tsp
Curry leaves
Rasam powder – 2 tablespoon
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Jaggery – as per taste
Coriander leaves


1. Wash & cook 1 cup of toor dal & keep aside.
2. Chop tomatoes & soak tamarind in water.
3. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a deep vessel. Add mustard seeds, cumin, red chilies & once the mustard seeds splatter, add hing, curry leaves, chopped tomatoes, rasam powder, turmeric powder and stir fry for 2 minutes.
4. Add cooked dal, salt, jaggery, soaked tamarind and cook for about 5 minutes.
5. Add coriander leaves & 1 tsp ghee.
6. Serve hot with rice & enjoy the dish!
